Creating Stories that Contest Cultural Marginalization

A Master Class led by Onawumi Jean Moss
10:00am-12:00pm

Create stories with strong multicultural content that honor both the dignity of the selected cultures and creators of the story.  Participants will have a chance to share memorable intercultural experiences and observations.  In addition to stories worthy of celebration, participants should be prepared to discuss such issues as prejudice, stereotypes, and the effect of cultural invisibility.  Examine relevant educational materials.  Participate in interactive activities.  At least one short story model will be used to facilitate story construction and participants will work in small groups to expedite the creative and writing process.

Once Upon a Time, When No One Was Looking:
Families Telling Stories
An Adult/Child Workshop led by Bill Harley
11:00am-12:00pm

Bring your brother, or sister, or mom, or dad, or son or daughter or grandparent.  In this hour long workshop, Bill will get families to tell their own stories about things that have happened.  Using prompts and a couple of story games, we’ll find out what’s funny about getting in trouble, and be reminded that all families are weird – but just in different ways.

Spoken Word Alive!
A Master Class led by Leeny Del Seamonds

1:00pm-3:00pm

Join Master Story Performer Leeny Del Seamonds in this intensive class for performers.  Through a series of exercises and improvisations, bring the spoken word alive and add dimension to stories.  Explore diverse vocal pitches, qualities and vivid, well-defined character voices.  Use body, hands and face to enhance communication and add movements/gestures and vocal variety to breathe life into story characters.  Learn how to make clean, crisp delineations between narrator and distinctive, well-defined characters.  We close with an “Ask Leeny” session.  Be prepared to move, challenge yourself and have fun!
